January: Resolutions and new beginnings

this year make a change that will last a lifetime

You know the story, it's as old as the hills.  Overindulge at Christmas, swear it'll never happen again and start an uber strict detox diet in January with all the best intentions.  If you make it to February it's a miracle of willpower and self deprivation.

This year I'd like to suggest something different, something that is sustainable all year around and most importantly works!

When you stop and think about wellness, health, vitality.  Whatever you want to call it.  It is nothing new, people were healthy way before we had the Dukan diet, way before weight watchers came into being, pushing their low-fat cakes and biscuits in the name of “health”.  What I'm advocating is an approach to food as nutrition, as fuel.  Which, really is exactly what it is at the purest level.

Now this might sound like I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but hey!  Nutrition isn't rocket science!  If we go back to the food as fuel metaphor it's pretty obvious that pre-prepared, processed, sugar & additive packed foods are the equivalent of getting dirty red diesel from a dodgy bloke in the pub.  Would you honestly say that that is what you'd choose to fuel yourself with!?  You are worthy of so much more than that!

We’re talking about real food, about simple cooking and lots and lots of vegetables. Nothing comes out of a packet, nothing has any ingredients that you cannot pronounce and every mouthful is packed full of goodness. Now that sounds like the fuel I want! How about you?

So here we go; here are our resolutions for a healthy, happy new year:

1. Eat vegetables with at least three meals and/or snacks per day.

2. Ditch the sugar (even the hidden ones like bread & pasta). If you want something sweet look to your fruit bowl.

3. Water; always have a glass or bottle of filtered water to hand during the day and drink from it regularly.

There you go; three easily doable steps that will make a real difference to your health and vitality in 2012 and beyond. Happy, healthy new year to you all.
