My love affair with Neal's Yard Remedies began over 20 years ago when, as a teenager in search of a moisturiser that wasn't tested on animals and that would suit my sensitive skin, I discovered their Covent Garden store. Little did I know at the time how this first visit would go on to shape my career as a Holistic Therapist!
An introduction to Complementary Therapy
In the middle of the store was a table filled with little bottles of aromatherapy oils. I asked a member of staff what they were for and she explained to me about the many and various uses for these beautifully scented substances. it was the first time I had heard mention of "Complementary Therapy" and I was very interested to find out more! The seed had been planted and now I am a fully qualified Remedial, Sports and Holistic Massage Therapist.
The other revelation to me on this first visit was their use of natural ingredients. As a child obsessed with everything to do with the natural world, and having just recovered from a particularly nasty reaction to a moisturiser sample given out to me in a department store from one of their expensive cosmetic counters, I felt an immediate confidence in the range of products on offer in the Neal's Yard store.
Becoming an Independent Consultant
So imagine my delight when I discovered that there is now a way I can work for Neal's Yard Remedies whilst still running my own therapy business! As an Independent Consultant for Neal's Yard Remedies Organic (NYRO), the home selling side of the business, I am fully supported by Neal's Yard with training opportunities and a massive online resource of information, and yet I am still my own boss! I can pick and choose how much or how little time I spend on the NYRO side of my business because there are no monthly sales targets. And yet, there are excellent rewards and incentives when I do place orders for myself and my clients or from a party or event. It also enables me to buy ethical, natural, quality products for myself and, perhaps more importantly, for my business, at a discount.
So much support!
Almost as soon as I had registered online as a consultant, I was contacted by my Upline Manager who introduced herself and provided me with some initial pointers to get me started. I was amazed at how much information is available through the consultants area of my NYRO website! If I'm honest, I was actually a little overwhelmed at first thinking perhaps I was expected to know ALL of this! However, another chat with my Upline (think Mentor rather than Manager!) and my fears were laid to rest - the information is there for us as and when we need it. Everything about the company is set up to offer so much support and advice and when I attended my first (FREE) training session and at every subsequent meeting and training day I have since attended, that support has grown. And the enthusiasm of everyone involved with the company, from fellow consultants right up to the very top, is totally infectious!
Ethical Products that sell themselves!
I was first drawn to Neal's Yard Remedies products because they were cruelty-free. This was very important to the teenage me. The fact that they are natural and contain organic ingredients was, at the time, a bonus. (Now it is equally important to me). I'm so pleased to be involved with a company who have not "sold out" in the decades since I first discovered them. Although the company has changed hands, it is still a family-run independent British business - it has not been swallowed up by any of the big multi-national pharmaceutical/cosmetic giants. You won't find any harmful chemicals such as parabens and phthalates in any Neal's Yard Remedies products - the company policy on ingredients is, "If in doubt, leave it out!". Ingredients are ethically sourced and the company supports a variety of Fair Trade and environmental projects. The organic credentials are certified by the Soil Association and the products are hand-made in the company's own eco-factory in Dorset. When I first became a consultant, I found it quite hard to "sell" the products to my clients, simply because many people had never heard of Neal's Yard Remedies. But what I've found is that actually, I don't really need to "sell" the products, just encourage people to try them. And then the quality of the products and the fabulous results most people receive from using them means that the products sell themselves! And although I initally shied away from having parties, since taking the plunge (by popular demand from my clients!) I have found it an incredibly rewarding experience, not only in the increased earnings but in sharing the products and enthusiasm for them and the company, the social aspect of giving a party and the opportunity to increase my client base through meeting new people at each party.
